The 1630/2A 3.45 mm wrench is the bare-handle, pack-friendly version of the Pro Spoke Wrench 1630/2P 3.45mm. Same four-flat engagement, same hardened-steel construction, smaller pack profile. For a workshop bench, the plastic-dipped 1630/2P is the right tool; for a saddlebag, a touring kit, or the dedicated trail-side toolkit, the bare-handle 1630/2A is.

3.45 mm is the dominant nipple size on premium wheelsets; DT Swiss, Mavic, most carbon road and gravel rims. A 3.45 mm wrench is what most mechanics reach for at the start of a build, and a 3.45 mm wrench is what most touring riders pack for the trip. The bare-handle 1630/2A is the version of that pack-friendly wrench: light enough that it doesn't add meaningful weight to a tool roll, compact enough that it fits where a dipped-handle wrench wouldn't.

The four-flat engagement transfers between both versions of the 1630/2 family. The geometry is what protects the nipple from rounding; the handle is the workshop ergonomics decision. Choose the bare handle when pack space matters; choose the dipped handle when bench comfort does.

Compatibility

  • Nipple size: 3.45 mm internal spoke nipples.
  • Engagement: four-flat.
  • Wheels: most premium-spec road, gravel, and MTB builds.
  • Companion: Pocket Wheel Truing Tool 1753/6 for trail-side use; the dipped-handle 1630/2P 3.45mm for bench work.

Specs

  • Working size: 3.45 mm, four-flat engagement.
  • Bare-steel handle (no plastic dip).
  • Compact form factor for tool rolls, seatpacks, and touring kits.

Built in Zreče, Slovenia

Unior has been forging hand tools in Zreče since 1919, and is the official technical partner of multiple World Tour and downhill teams. The bare-handle 1630/2A is the lightweight pack version of the 1630/2P family. Same in-house construction, same nipple-protection geometry, smaller pack signature; the workshop tools we send out with our riders need to be the same precision as the workshop tools at the bench, just in a different form factor.

Pro tip from our mechanics

A 3.45 mm bare-handle wrench is the single most-used emergency-truing tool in the cycling world; 3.45 mm covers a substantial fraction of the wheels on rides longer than a commute. If you're packing one spoke wrench for a tour or an adventure ride and you don't know the nipple size, the 3.45 mm is the right bet. Add the 3.3 mm if you know one or more of the wheels in the group uses smaller nipples. The full wheel-truing workflow is in How to true a bike wheel →
