A bike shop in October is two different temperatures by lunchtime. The morning is cold enough to want a hoodie; the afternoon, after the door has been open for a few wheel pickups and a fitting session, isn't. A pullover means committing; you're either in it or you're in the awkward in-between of having pulled it halfway up to vent heat. A zip is the layer that solves that.

This is the zip-up version of our pullover, built on the same fabric: 80% ring-spun combed cotton and 20% polyester at 280 g/m². The combed-yarn detail is the part that matters most for longevity. Combing pulls the short fibers out of the yarn before spinning, so the cuffs and hem don't pill the way a cheaper blend does. The 20% polyester keeps the shape through the wash cycle; the dominant cotton keeps the feel right.

The zip itself is the second consideration. A heavy-toothed zipper rides over the front pouch line and stays out of the chest area when you're leaning over a bench; small detail, real difference in actual shop use. The hood is single-jersey lined for comfort if you do pull it up, and the drawstrings are flat cord rather than round (round cord frays under bar-tape friction; flat cord doesn't).

Built by a tool company

Unior has been forging hand tools in Zreče, Slovenia, since 1919, and is the official technical partner of multiple World Tour and downhill teams. We picked the construction details for the Made For Work line from the perspective of a person at a workbench: shape retention through repeated wash cycles, flat-cord drawstrings, a zipper that vents without commitment.

Pro tip from our mechanics

Pullover or zip is mostly preference; the case for the zip is temperature swing; a shop that runs cold in the morning and warms up by lunch is the use case the zip solves. The same fabric and construction as the pullover; the same combed-cotton and 280 g/m² spec. The rest of the workshop wear (tees, hats, drinkware, bottle openers) we wrote up in: What we wear in the workshop →
